The issue being presented by this group is school funding. We plan to address its sources, its uses, its affects on the school, and how it is affected by the government. This topic is is relevant to us because we will be teaching in these schools that need funding. Even if we do not go into the profession of teaching, we will have kids who are affected by the increases and decreases of school funding, and we will be the ones (the taxpayers) who will be footing a good portion of the bill.
II. Research Summary
My research question is, how does the government effect school funding. I chose to investigate the question through the passing of laws and federal funding. I found that summarizes each team member's the government has a history of federal involvement in funding, that starts back in 1965 when former President Lyndon Johnson passed the "Elementary and Secondary Education Act." Since then the government has been proactive in its approach to school funding. Most recently, with the passing of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the America Competes Act, the federal government has spent lots of money on public schooling. Currently, 7% of our federal government is dedicated to public education and since 1965 the government has committed to over 321 billion dollars in education programs (grades K-12). Yearly, the government commits over 400 billion dollars to public educaiton within the federal budget. So the government commits a great deal of funding to public schools, and in my reasearch I break down the facts. (Greg Horowitz)
My research on question is How Does Funding Effect The Schools? I decided to look at this question and discover the differences in funding, the differences between public and private schools, and the differences between the funding of Federal, State, and Local Levels. I also looked into the effects of funding for teachers and students. It was interesting to see the differences between the teachers and students. The teachers feed off of the same stuff that students need to learn well. A teacher isn't doing their particular research question. job if they don't have tools to use to teach their students. Another thing that i looked at was the disbursment of the money. In my research, I am trying to bring al of teh facts out so that people can learn about funding in a meaningful way. (Tory Waldeisen)
My research question is where does funding for public schools come from? This is the most straightforward question to answer but also one of the most controversial. The majority of school funding comes from local taxes which affects all tax payers. These local taxes most often come from property taxes which is a hot issue among many towns and districts. Home owners and tax payers agree that schools need funding and often more funding than they receive but they do not agree that the money should come from highered taxes. Some states have come up with alternative sources for this funding and it is always an issue at the voters poles.
Funding or lack there of in public schools is a major issue among states. An article by Debra Watson stated that 40 of Michigan's elementary and secondary schools were planned to be shut down due to lack of funding. Many people agree that schools need more funding but do not want to pay higher property taxes. One Ohio politician suggested that a portion of funding be taken from lottery profits. Wherever these funds come from, most people believe that it should be handled more heavily by the state rather than regionally.(Rachel Mason)
II. Group Product Overview
Our group plans to present the topic of school funding through not only a class discussion, but also a visual aide. We plan to reinforce our argument through a powerpoint presentation.
